We are just about two weeks out from closing on the new house and I couldn't be more excited. These last few weeks have been super crazy as all of the finishing details make their way into the house. Finally we are getting to see 10+ months of decisions coming to life.



The painters, plumbers, electricians and gardeners are all at the house this week and next. I can't wait to see the house with lights wired, appliances in place and mirrors and fixtures on the walls. The master bathroom is really starting to come together, so I thought I'd post some progress pictures.

The last of the hardware, fixtures and textiles should be in by the end of the week. Here are a few of the items still missing. We decided to go with a plantation shutter above the tub with a relaxed valance over the shutter in Windor Smith's Riad fabric. It's a spot on match for the wall color. This will be the last item installed, and may even happen after we close.

One of the items that is completely missing from our bathroom right now is a vanity. In our floor plan you can see it placed between the tub and the shower unit. I didn't want to order new cabinetry for this space, I felt like it needed something with a little more character that was a little less new. This is sort of the look I'm going for, hopefully a few kid-free hours with wine, girlfriends and antique stores will solve this problem!

Selection Sunday

We finalized all of our lights last month and the orders have been trickling in daily. Install isn't for a few more weeks, but it's been fun to sign for these deliveries and see some of our choices come to fruition. We are capping the lights in our informal dining room until the kids stop stabbing forks into the dining table (at which point we'll get a long farmhouse table). So in basically 6 years we should be ready to install the lanterns. I kid...I hope.



We're also reusing the lantern from our current dining room in our foyer. I wasn't sure what I wanted to put in the foyer and I didn't want to make an expensive mistake. So we'll live with our lantern for now and that will buy me a year or so to decide on the size and shape of something for the main entry.

We finalized our exterior lighting as well and scored an awesome deal on our lamp post since it was a discontinued Martha Stewart Lighting post. Our vendor did an incredible job finding affordable wall sconces that matched the post from another company. And after a bit of a wiring debacle wherein our exterior lights were wired in the wrong place completely (thankfully I noticed before the siding went up) we managed to get everything fixed. I think the exterior lights are some of the last things to go up at the house.

One of the fixtures that are a necessary evil for our family are ceiling fans. I know people either love them or hate them. But I need one on to sleep and my kids need them on as well. Plus there's nothing like fall in Upstate NY with the windows open and the fans running. The air is incredible. I tried to pick something that would just melt into the ceiling and not create too much of a visual ruckus, but frankly this fan is in nearly every room in our house. And that's just that.

Selection Sunday

We found out on Tuesday that we needed to finalize all of our paint selections for the new house...by Thursday. Each color, beyond a few of the whites we selected, is painted at a labor upcharge making any mistake both financially and visually costly. Our builder was really gracious about letting me paint swatches on the drywall and even met me at the house to contribute his opinion :)



I had thought about what I wanted to go with for a color scheme in the new house, but we have yet to pick fabrics, rugs, additional furnishings -- you know, the things you normally pull color from. I frantically selected shower curtains for the bathrooms and then just rolled with the rest, trying to stick with colors that were either neutral enough to serve as a backdrop for a future room or matching existing pieces (i.e. the drapes in the kids' rooms and our guest bedroom, tile in our mudroom and powder room) to come up with a plan.

And this is what we selected.

Without coming back to these pins directly, I think we really ended up exactly where we wanted to be.

Our painters start on Monday and will prime and put on the first coat of color everywhere this week. The second coat doesn't hit the walls until after everything -- from cabinets and trim to builtins -- are installed. I can't wait to walk through our house on Friday and see it really start coming to life.
