On Being Puff

Hey Cutie Bug,

You are 27 months old. I don't think I'm allowed to count your age in months anymore, but since I'm the mommy I'm going to make up the rules. I have been meaning to write down all of the things that have been going on in your little world for a while, but I never actually sat down to make those notes. Lately, you are so funny and so astute that I have to write this down before I forget. So let's start with how much you talk and some of the things you are saying, shall we?

For starters, whenever you cry or you're upset, I rub your back and whisper to you "I know, I know" as in, I know baby, I know you're hurting/sad/scared, I'm here to make it better. Now when you are hurt or sad or scared, you will walk around crying while repeating over and over again "I know, I know". The other day you had a terrible diaper rash and while I was wiping you, you were crying "I knowwww, I knowwww". I was trying so hard not to laugh.

Crying is something that you do often. Mostly for dramatic effect. You like to tell me no. And not in a mean way. But I'll ask you "Reese, would you like to have lunch now?" and you'll look at me and say "no" very sweetly. It's hard to be mad at you when you are just being honest.

A few weeks ago daddy was home alone with all of you guys and you were really having a day. Bubba fell and got hurt and you were walking around crying hysterically. Daddy asked you what was wrong and you said "I'm crying!" (very dramatically). He said "I know you're crying, why are you crying?" and you said "I'm sad!" (even more dramatically). You are very in touch with your feelings.

You are also very polite. When you aren't telling us no, you say "yes, please". Reese would you like to go for a walk? Yes, please. You also use thank you regularly, although you immediately follow it up with a "you're welcome!" and welcome is said with a ton of emphasis WELL-COMM. You essentially thank yourself and you're welcome yourself for everything.

Today when I picked you guys up from school your teacher pulled me aside to tell me about something you said at snack time. Apparently you were playing when everyone was sitting for snacks. She asked you if you wanted to sit at the table and have snack with everyone else. She told me you put your hand on your hip, turned your foot out to the side and said "well, what is it?" ha! She was floored. I don't know where you get this stuff from.

You have started using your own name with regularity. Share Reese, Reese turn, Reese try. The other day we were playing hide and go seek and I was pretending to look for you. You were "hiding" underneath one of daddy's winter hats (which is to say you pulled the hat on over your whole head and assumed that you were now invisible). I kept saying "Reese, Reese, where are you?" you pulled the hat off your head and shouted "Here she is! It's Puff!" It was the first time I had heard you call yourself Puff and I darn near peed my pants. Loved it.

Other things that you say all the time are "what happened?" and "careful!" and I know this is because I am always asking you guys what happened when someone is crying or yelling at you all to be careful. This house full of monkeys we live in can get crazy sometimes.

When you don't want to do something you close your eyes in this funny little way that makes your nose scrunch up and then you tilt your head to the side. Then you will open your eyes just a smidge, just so they are tiny little slits and you check to see if I'm still standing there. I think the head tilt helps you see out of your tiny eye slits. I wish I could capture this face on camera. I haven't been able to yet. Anyway, this exchange happens no less than forty times a day...when I want to take your toothbrush away, when I want you to eat something that I'm waving in front of your mouth on a fork, when I ask you to put something away. I could go on and on. You literally try to will things away with your mind. What a hoot.

Right now you love animals, especially animals that live on farms. You know all of your animal noises - even dolphins (eee-eee!) and monkeys (ooo-eee-aaa). Your favorite animals are definitely horses. You run around shouting "yee-haw" or "giddy-up". All of your little people are farmers or cowboys. You have just started playing pretend. Eating pretend food, having your little people talk to one another or ride their horses. Your imagination is amazing. My heart explodes watching you translate your world.

You love bouncing and jumping, whether it's on a trampoline or mommy's bed. You jump while screaming "I'm careful!" what a hoot. You also love playing catch and when I hear you shout "RED-DY! catch!" I know I am about to be hit in the head with a ball. We still have to work on giving people time to respond to "ready". You love to take pictures with my big camera. You hold the camera to your eyes and scream "camerrr, smile!" Some of the best pictures I have of your brother, lately, are ones you took.

You are not the kind of kid that likes to be told what to do. You have to be part of the decision making process. It's not a bad quality to have, at all. I love that you are strong-willed and assertive. I have had to learn how to parent you, and I am still learning. I have found what works is giving you choices. Instead of asking if you want to get dressed in the morning, I need to ask you "which of these three dresses do you want to wear today?" to get buy-in. You are able to pick out your own clothes and you do a great job matching already. You pick out your hair bows daily and you absolutely love your routines, and will remind me if I left something out ("I brush teeth now?").

While you are a very dominant personality, you are also one of the kindest people I know. I don't know how a heart so big fits in your tiny body. You give out hugs for no reason. You seek out your siblings to kiss them or hold their hands. You tell mommy and daddy and Bubba all the time that you love us. You are kind. You share without being asked to do so. If you have water, you bring your glass to Bubba so he can have a sip. If someone falls and gets hurt, you run to help them and ask if they are okay. (After you tell them to be careful! ha!) I often find you sitting next to Lola, just holding her hand. You are such a good big sister.

Your favorite TV show is Bubble Guppies and you can tell me exactly which 'sode you want to watch and you know most of the words when it comes on. Yesterday I put your hair in pigtails and when you saw yourself in the mirror, you touched your piggies and said "like Oona". I almost died. Your favorite movie is Finding Nemo. As a result of watching Nemo, you now say "awesome" and "dude" with regularity.

You are slowly becoming a great eater. It took a while. I give you credit because you will say "I try it" and put your tongue to your fork. You don't always eat what I serve, but you always "try" everything. You will request certain foods, even if you'll never eat them (i.e. a sandwich). But since you have started talking, meals have become easier because you can tell me what you want and your requests are always wonderful -- pears, cheese, yogurt, tomatoes -- things I don't mind you eating, so you make my life easy. I asked you what you wanted for breakfast this morning and you told me pancakes. Ha! I didn't have time to make them, so we agreed on cereal and I am making you pancakes for dinner, as promised. Your favorite foods right now are definitely bananas, spaghetti, tomatoes and blueberries. You eat a half pint of blueberries almost every day. I don't know where you put it all.

At night, not only do we have to go through our normal bedtime routine (baths, lotion, milk, books) but now you have to physically be tucked in. You lay down and tell us "tuck in"and hand us your blankets so that we can lay them over you and tuck them under you. We say goodnight to each of your animals -- and there are many of them that you sleep with now -- and place them all around you. Already, you try to find ways to keep us in your room. "I have hug now?" I mean seriously, who could say no to another hug? If I let you, you'd make me hug you 75 times more. I usually draw the line at ten extra hugs and then we really go night nights.

You are beautiful and spunky, funny and kind. Each day I am amazed by your little personality and the little girl you are becoming. I am so excited about all the things that are to come.

Love you, Puff.

The Happiest of Days

Reese and Ryan turned two today. We kicked off the week of birthday celebrations with a bombardment of balloons and some new bikes.

On Tuesday they'll get to celebrate with their preschool friends at school. And next weekend is their birthday party. A full week of fun.

I can't believe my babies are two.

No Denying this Child

{ Puff and Me }

And please don't ask me what I was dressed as --I think it was a mouse costume. But I may have been an elephant. Hard to say.

That's What She Said

Earlier this week, this sweet little angel walked up to her brother and ripped the pacifier out of his mouth. When he started to cry she took the paci out of her mouth, wagged her finger in his face and said "share".

See? They can be taught.

We Officially Have a Walker

I'm so excited about this. I honestly think it's going to be so much easier to get around now. Up until recently I carried both kids at the same time everywhere (up stairs, down stairs, into Mommy and Me, out to the car). But they are getting too big and too heavy to keep that up. Now I'll be able to walk carrying Ryan while holding Reese's hand. I don't want to think about how much easier it will get once I have two walkers. The thought just makes me too giddy.

Lately

The kids seem to be getting bigger by the day. They are obsessed with drinking from cups. Especially cups with straws. They will chug water, trade cups and chug some more.

New favorite past times include trying to break the safety locks off the cabinets, opening doors (or at least attempting to open them), shaking my living room lamps by their bases and climbing the stairs.

{ monkey sasquatch }

Ryan has also decided that he will only eat off of a fork from now on. It's cute beyond cute. He's a very determined little eater. I'm amazed at how he will swipe his fork at his tray pretending to stab food and then move the fork to his mouth. I say pretending because he isn't very good at getting food onto his fork, so much of our meals are spent with me sticking food on his fork and him moving the food to his mouth. He is very good with yogurt and a spoon though :)

Reese is stringing together more and more steps. We got up to seven steps in a row this weekend. Chicken little still won't step out on her own, I'm wondering if she will ever walk unassisted at this point. I imagine her at 14 with me helping her get to her feet and holding her hand. Okay clearly that's a gross exaggeration, but this is a kid I thought would be walking by Halloween...

In addition to baby steps and baby breaking and entering, Reese has started smiling proudly. Except it is the weirdest smiley face you've ever seen. Crooked and full of teeth and a scrunched up face. I've been trying to get it on camera, but she gets all normal when I break out the film. Best I've been able to do is grab this video. You're welcome in advance.

Santa Spoiler

I guess it's a good thing that Santa is bringing someone a baby stroller and a Stella doll for Christmas this year...

Like Mother Like Daughter

I took this picture the other day and realized that my kid, who I was convinced looked just like my husband, is a dead ringer for me.

Puff the Magic Baby looks just like her momma. Poor thing.

My Kids are Geniuses

End of October Picture Dump

Since I've been a neglectful blogger, this is going to just be a picture dump of moments I want to keep. I need to transfer my pictures over to CD's and remove them from my hard drive. I have over 7000 (yes SEVEN THOUSAND) pictures of the kids on my computer. You can imagine how slow everything is these days. I'm just terrified of moving things and deleting them. Ahhhh.

An outtake from our 41 week photoshoot. Reese kept crying and she was all red in the pictures and it was too dark. But this picture is classic Reese and Ryan faces, so I had to keep it.

41 week photoshoot do-over. Sporting bibs from our Nana Jayne. These kids crack me up.

Reese has a flair for the dramatic lately. She's learned that some things are off limits. We've started using the word "no" around here and redirecting her to something else. This is the face I get when I say no. Heaven help me.

The cute thing about the crying these days though is that the babies will either cry with one another (completely fake for one, and a dramatic tantrum for the other) or they will try to comfort each other. The comforting is a.d.o.r.a.b.l.e.

 Now that Reese can reach the windowsills she spends a lot of time looking out the window. This is also a favorite past time for Gracie <3

I was actually trying to take a picture of Reese from much farther away, but she decided to try to grab the camera and this was the shot I got. And I must say, I LOVE IT. I cannot believe I have a daughter with light eyes. Never in all my days would I have believed that was possible. I think her eyes are gorgeous. They just melt me. Ugh!

Just a tiny baby bottom in baby blue jeans. I die.

 The kids are afraid of the vacuum, so when I do their room I put them in a crib together. As I was vacuuming today I looked up and saw this. They are ridiculous. Love them so much.

Baby bed head. It's almost time for Ry to get a hairs cut. OMGoodness though, it's hard to part with his crazy locks. But they're crossing the line from cute to out of control these days...

Notice the fold in the bumpers? My kids like to use them as pillows when they sleep. Crazy critters.

Poor Gracie

To say that our four-legged daughter is shocked by our two-legged daughter's mobility would be the understatement of the century.

Poor thing never saw it coming. And boy is she in for it now. That tail is like baby catnip.

22 Days

That's the amount of time that elapsed from her first rock on all fours to today, when she crawled for the first time. I tell you 22 days felt like 22 years.

Of course she learned to crawl and pull up to her knees and pull up to a standing position all in one day, which means our (still) gate-less house has officially become a death trap.

What a Nailbiter

Seeing your kids hit a milestone is the best thing in the world. However, watching them fall, fail, struggle and scream in frustration while they are developing the skills to achieve that milestone is horrific. I want to show Reese how to crawl. How to move her little hands and feet. How to catch herself when she falls off balance. But all I can do is surround her with pillows and hug her when she gets scared.

This week she figured out how to go from crawling (or at least the crawl position) to sitting. Of course, she had to learn this new trick in the wet, slippery, unchildproofed bathtub. She's now perfected it on dry land and I bought one of these for our tub adventures.

How the kid figured out how to go from pretending to crawl to sitting and skipped over the actual crawling part (for now) is beyond me. I guess we'll be facing another week of watching her scream and flop, since all she wants to do is sit up and show off her new skill right now.

RHR, Middle Names, Books, Flowers & Fruit

Yesterday the husband and I celebrated our fourth year of marriage. Apparently the traditional gift symbols for the fourth year are books, flowers or fruit.

My awesome husband nailed this year's anniversary gift. I mean really nailed it. I cried at the dinner table, that's how well he did.

He handed me a purple (my favorite color) bag with my copy of To Kill a Mockingbird inside of it. Now you have to know two things to understand why he's so awesome. 1.) To Kill a Mockingbird is tied for first as my all time favorite book and 2.) Reese is named after its author (Reese Harper = Harper Lee).

When we were picking names for the kids we came up with a list of three boy names and three girl names, first names only. My family on its best day can be described as bellicose. We won't talk about our worst days on the blog. So when it came time to select middle names for the babies I really wanted to stay as far away as possible from naming the kids after a relative.

I'm a huge bookworm and reformed English teacher, so I asked Joe if I could name the kids after my favorite authors and he agreed. I picked 6 names of men and women who have ignited my love of reading over the years and that's how our children were named.

(In case you're wondering, Ryan Henry = Henry David Thoreau.)

So what does a book I already own in a purple bag mean anyway? Well, the book was a place holder for my gift which hasn't arrived yet. It's a first edition copy of To Kill a Mockingbird that Joe got me so I could read it to Reese when she gets older and then pass it on to her when she's a big girl, since that's her namesake.

Thoughtful, perfect and wonderful in every way.

Check Out My Studs

Reese got her ears pierced for her Six Monthday. My little peanut was so good. Held still, barely cried. And she looks adorable. I snapped this quick shot of her just before bedtime.

She's such a beautiful little girl. Just going through pictures that I took today is making me want to run up to her crib, grab her out of it and snuggle her. My mush, with pierced ears. I can't take it.

Reese: 7 weeks

Good Morning Miss Priss, you are seven weeks old today. I've been meaning to write you this letter for a long time now, but you've been keeping me on my toes. Daddy and I often joke that if we had two babies as high maintenance as you are we'd run away.

{ the day you were born }

So let me tell you a little bit about your last 49 days of life. When you were born your poor little face was so swollen (especially your eyes) that mommy was worried about you! But after a week your swelling went down and the prettiest little face was revealed. You have the most perfect little lips, like a porcelain doll, and the tiniest little tongue that you stick out all the time and make the funniest little faces. Your little eyes aren't strong enough to focus very well, and so you are often cross-eyed. It sounds bad, but it's actually quite cute.

Your expressions bring such joy to our hearts. Because of the faces you make and your animated features, we started calling you Bug. Partly because you were so bug-eyed when you were born and partly because you are so tiny and cute like a little ladybug. I hope you don't hate us for the nickname when you're a teenager!

{ your first week home }

{ 3 weeks old, the day Daddy went back to work }

You are our little sleeping beauty and we sure have learned that you, my dear, need your rest. When you wake up from a good nap you arch your back, tilt your head backward, put your arms up over your head and purse your little lips. Mommy has been trying to capture this on film for weeks but it's hard to do since she's always the one holding you. It's quite possibly the cutest wake up the world has ever seen.

{ the best picture I've been able to get of your sleep stretch! }

You'll kill me for this one day I'm sure, but sometimes you wake up and you are not cute and sweet. Daddy and I joke that sometimes we've "released the Kraken". You start by breathing funny, with nasally little inhalations and then you start to snort. You manage to snort and huff for a full five or ten minutes (you are that slow to wake up) and we always know what's coming. A full out cry. Daddy and I tease you a lot (we don't take too many things seriously, as I'm sure you already know) and so we'll breathe and snort like you and laugh at the sounds you make. Know that we do so out of complete and total love. And one day if you need an inhaler, we'll buy you one.

You still love to sleep in a tight little ball with your legs crossed and your hands near your face, just like you did in Mommy's belly.

{ how you slept in my belly, except you were upside down! }

At night you curl up with Daddy and you nuzzle so far into his side that we worry you'll suffocate, but no matter how many times we move you, you squirm until you are right up next to him with your face buried into his armpit. Your head always smells like Old Spice deodorant because of it.

Your doctor says you have colic, but Mommy and Daddy realized that what you really have is a preference for a LOT of sleep so we stopped waking you up from your naps and you are finally a happy(ier) baby.

{ how Daddy helped you with your colic }

You smile and coo and follow us with your eyes. You're happiest when your held and as much as you love to sleep you hate being put down for a nap. When you are the most inconsolable the only person who can get you to nap is your Daddy. You just love being in his arms. He'll walk laps around the house for hours for you. He loves you very much and you already have his whole heart in the palm of your tiny hand.

{ modeling Daddy's hat }

Speaking of your hands, they are the most dainty hands anyone has ever seen. You and your brother are almost the same size and weight, but other than that there is no comparison. Your hands and feet are so teeny tiny and you are so delicate. Lifting you is like lifting a bag of feathers. I love to play with your toes and you love it when I rub them while you are nursing.

By two weeks old, you could already roll from side to side and you were a tummy time champ. Now at 7 weeks you can hold your head up all by yourself and turn it from side to side.

You've recently learned to grip things with your hands. Your favorite things to grab are Mommy's hair and the drawstrings on Daddy's hoodies.

You and Gracie have really hit it off and you love it when she lays next to you and kisses your face, though you're still not sure what to make of her when she gets riled up and tries to play with you. When that happens you purse your lips and clench your fists so tight your knuckles turn white.

You love your swing and the sound of the ocean, but the bouncy chair bores you to death. You've had such a hard time with getting up air bubbles in your tummy that we bought you a Moby wrap; you can sleep for hours when you are strapped to my chest. Your favorite wraps are the kangaroo and the newborn hug hold - ones that let your head be next to my heart. I have to say that holding you so close, watching you sleep and listening to you breathe will be one of the things I miss most about you being this tiny.

You have somehow figured out how to pull your hands and arms into the body of your onesie in your sleep. Ironically, you've also figured out how to stick your foot out through the button holes. Every morning I wake up wondering where your limbs will be!

You are still wearing all newborn clothes, but we think you are about 2 weeks away from finally fitting into some of your 0-3 month and 3 month sizes. I love playing dress up with you and guessing what will fit you each week.

{ your first pair of jeans }

Mommy's favorite color is purple so she bought you a ton of purple clothes, but I soon realized that while purple is my favorite, you look the prettiest in pale pink. It's definitely your color!

Daddy noticed two weeks ago that you have little waves of brown (or hazel) floating into your right eye, he was convinced you'd have blue eyes. You sure fooled him. You definitely have Daddy's nose and we're pretty sure that you'll have Mommy's eye color and blonde hair, but I guess only time will tell.

After so many years of waiting and so many months of anticipation you are finally here and our worlds will never be the same. You are so much more amazing, more beautiful and more sweet than we could have ever dreamed. We have loved every second of being your parents (even the rough ones!) and we are so excited to watch you grow.

Happy Seven Weeks Bug!

Love,

Mommy
