A Post About Diaper Bags

As a mom of three kids ages 2 and under, all of whom are still in diapers, I obviously have to haul a lot of stuff around with me. For the last 18 months I have been using a Kelly Moore Photography bag (the Libby) as my diaper bag. I love it. It's orange (go Cuse!). It's big (so it can hold a lot of stuff). And it's fashionable (an added bonus).

What it is not is light, compact, or easy to carry. It also has real metal zippers which look snazzy but are completely impractical and tear the skin off of my knuckles every time I try to use the small pockets in the front.

A few weeks ago I was running through Target (literally, running) to buy a breast pump. I was on my way to a photography workshop in Boston and I conveniently forgot to pack my pump. Which I didn't realize until I woke up in a hotel, on a Sunday, four hours away from home. It. Was. Awesome.

My wonderful husband dealt with me crying like a fool on the phone, while I scrambled to get ready and attempted to hand express (I so do not recommend doing this. Ever.). Of course, my MapQuest app did its best to destroy my last thread of sanity by zeroing in on the fact that I was staying in a hotel who was a paid advertiser on their site and thereby completely disabling my cell phone. Joe did what any husband who has a wife on the brink of a nervous breakdown would do. He sat on the phone with me and searched for any store open on a Sunday in a 15 mile radius that would sell breast pumps. Lo and behold there was a Target close by. He called ahead and had customer service hold a pump for me at the front desk. All I had to do was go in, pay, leave. Simple enough.

I got to Target and customer service was on the side opposite of the entrance doors. As I ran frantically through the main aisle, I ran by the display of pocketbooks and handbags and one, in particular, caught my eye. So I did what any person running late for a workshop in a strange city who still needs to pump her leaking breasts would do. I stopped and evaluated the bag, found a mirror, modeled the bag on my arm, started to look through the bag to evaluate its storage, slapped myself across the face for wasting time, threw the bag back on the shelf and ran to customer service to pay for my pump.

The hoarder in me wanted to buy the bag and evaluate it later. I figured I could return it to a local Target when I got home if it sucked. But the part of me that had just thrown the mother of all tantrums  over my missing pump while my husband patiently helped me navigate my world in my fragile state decided that there was no way I could explain the purchase of this bag to the Mr. when I got home. ("You see...I was running frantically through Target when I decided to stop and try on bags...")

Home I went. Bagless. But I could not stop thinking about the bag that got away. It seemed too good to be true. Cute, functional, ample storage space, and CHEAP. I love me a good bargain.

Last week I ran into Target with all three kids, alone. I don't know what was worth doing that for, people, but I did it. And the red dot sea parted and there sat my bag. In all of its glory. I snatched it up and hid the purchase in my minivan for three days while I decided if I really needed another diaper bag.

The answer was, I did.

Here it is. And I am telling you RUN, do not walk and go get yourself one too. People, this thing holds EVERYTHING my much larger, much heavier, much more expensive diaper bag held and then some.

Proof.

{ everything my bag holds }

Here's a close up of my bag's contents, in it is the following: one case of travel wipes, four diapers for the twins, four diapers for the baby, munchkin poop bags (love these!), hand lotion, change purse, checkbook, wallet, two kinds of sunblock, bug spray, earbuds, tissues, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, lip balm and lip glosses, keys, cell phone, sunglasses and planner. Oh, and I usually stuff a nursing cover in there with the rest of that too.

I recently downgraded from a Erin Condren Notebook planner to a Paper Source planner because the Erin Condren planner is a monstrosity. But even that big arse thing fit in my bag, no problemo.

And the bag was only $32 before my red card discount. Steal. The material is some sort of synthetic leather look alike, which sounds awful, but let me tell you it means that the darn thing is water proof and wipes clean. So far it has withstood a torrential downpour and an unfortunate incident with a juice box. The liquid just beads right off of the bag.

Several colors are sold in stores (mostly tan, cognac and grays from what I have seen) and there are even more colors online. Happy Shopping!

Lily Bee's Boutique

My friend Steph is one of those Martha Stewart mommies that you want to hate for being so good at so many things, but she's way too kind and fun to hang out with to actually dislike. Her little ones, Lily and Landon, are cute as buttons and are always dressed to the nines in adorable little people outfits from J. Crack and Tea. Her house renovations are to die for and she's one of those people with impeccable style to boot.

While pregnant with her oldest, Steph started making baby items to calm that nesting instinct. People kept asking her where she bought her baby items and were shocked when they found out everything was DIY, thus Lily Bee's Boutique was born. And it's a side business! As in she does this in addition to being a full-time mommy and having a full-time career.

Lily Bee's signature items are handmade burp cloths with custom name tags and burp cloth 'cakes' for baby showers, but the shop also makes nursery art and other baby treats. After receiving a set myself when I had Lola, her burp cloths have become my go-to gift for expectant mothers. If you're going to get spit up on, it might as well be in style.

Feel free to check out some of her swag and like her facebook page.

New Baby Gifts: Monthly Onesies

Over the weekend my computer told me I needed to delete some files because my disk was nearly full. Is it just me or is that not the scariest thing? It's all pictures and I hate deleting them because, well, WHAT IF they didn't copy to my back-up disk correctly?! Anyway, while backing everything up I came across pictures of this project that I completely forgot about.

When my sister had Logan in December I made her some onesies to document his growth. I tried to find those belly stickers for him, but I couldn't find anything I loved and so I just did it myself. Every once in a while my need to have things be perfect serves me well.

I designed the numbers in photoshop and then flipped the image horizontally and printed them out on iron-on transfer sheets (you can buy these at any craft store).

The key is flipping the image so that when you cut out the circles and iron them onto the onesies they read correctly (otherwise you'll have to put your kid in front of a mirror to take the pics Winking Smiley ).

I bought *the cutest* bear for her. Seriously I almost kept it, especially after I got this picture back from our family photoshoot...

A few sets of onesies and a cute box later and my gift was all set.

If anyone is interested, I can upload the iron-on files to google docs later this week to make them downloadable.

Thanks for all of the feedback on our pendants over the weekend! We went with 34" -- split the difference -- and hopefully all will be right with the world (or at least our kitchen) again.

That's So Cute

I have mentioned, more than a few times, that I have several friends who are very talented ladies. Mothering is hard work, and these women rock that role and own their own businesses as well. No small feat. Rather than keeping their awesomeness (and their awesome work) a secret I am going to share their swag here with you all. Note, these are not sponsored posts. Just really cool stuff made by some really cool people. I hope you enjoy their craftiness as much as I do.

My friend Lindsey is the talent behind the hot air balloon cuteness that adorned the walls and gift baskets at the twins' second birthday party. She runs an Etsy shop (with her mother in law!) called That's So Cute that specializes in invitations and accessories for parties, weddings, baby showers, corporate events and more.

Check out her work if you have a minute. You can also find her company online at Thats-So-Cute.com, on Facebook and Twitter.

Sour Milk

Why are nursing clothes so absolutely fugly? I swear it's a conspiracy by clothing manufacturers to make you look like turds at a time when you already feel like turds. And then charge you $82 per item to boot.

With the twins it wasn't as big of a deal because, let's be honest, I rarely left the house when they were little. I sat in my living room covered in spit up while wearing old yoga pants and ill-fitting nursing tanks and no one was the wiser. This time around I'm not as (un)lucky. The twins have activities and I have to face the general public. This has meant two things: 1. I have to actually find clothes that fit and don't smell like sour milk to wear and 2. I've had to get over my fears of nursing (somewhat) in public.

Finding clothes that fit nicely is a challenge in and of itself right now. Finding clothes that fit, that allow me easy and discreet access to nurse while chasing two toddlers presents a new set of challenges. And, to add insult to injury, my pregnancy made my diastasis-damaged stomach muscles even more lax, so I have to find creative ways to hide my postpartum belly.

While reveling in my abundant free time last week while we shacked up with my inlaws (a perk of being temporarily homeless), I started playing around on Polyvore. I know, so 2010 of me right? Whatevs. I'm currently addicted.

I started plugging in pieces I already own and things that I have had my eye on to create outfits that allow me to chase the twins, nurse the baby, feel like a human being and look like I've got my shit together. And since I'm fairly certain I'm not the only momma out there that wants to dress in cute clothes that are functional and affordable (since let's be honest, are you really going to wear a nursing bra once you don't have to?), I figured I'd share my boards here.

Be warned: I'm no fashionista and I suck MAJORLY at accessorizing. I rarely wear anything besides my wedding rings and the same pair of ziamonds that I got for Christmas a few years ago (because I'm wayyyy too cheap to wear real diamond earrings). But I manage to put myself together most days and feel half cute sometimes. So why not share the love?

Running around the mall is a thing of the past, unless I want to drag a limp toddler behind me while pushing two other kids in a stroller. So most of my purchases are made online and I rarely shop at stores that don't provide free shipping and free returns. These Polyvore boards have been like a virtual fitting room for me. Or at least that's how I'm justifying wasting spending time online making outfit boards. I'm simply saving myself time and anguish in a public setting...
